CAR BOOT SALE
At our December 7th Terrigal Lions Club Car Boot Sale very light rain fell around 6am to cause some concern but cleared quickly. Radar images showed that there was no more rain to follow. Thankfully that information turned out to be correct.
And to top it off for our last CBS for 2008 yet another new record day was achieved for our club. We had 77 sellers and our BBQ also created a new record.
We were all happy and all our buyers and sellers were happy.

NEWS OCT 8 2008 Car Boot Sale
Unpredictable spring weather caused problems for our 5th October Car Boot Sale. Light rain started falling during the Saturday night and was still falling after 7am on the Sunday morning. The weather bureau radar showed the rain to be very slowly moving away to the north-east, almost remaining in the one spot. The rain finally moved away but returned by 10am and there were other showers during the morning.
The Lions Club regretted cancelling the event but later it proved to be the correct decision. Our club members had been at the park since 5.30am had set up our equipment. Our sellers and the Lions both lost money on the day.

The President also made special awards to Lions John Goodwin and Shamus O’Reilly.
The President made special mention of Lions John Turner (19 years a Lion) and John Sneyd (32 years a Lion, and sponsor of 17 new Lions during that time). Both of these Lions are Melvin Jones Fellows, are major contributors to this club’s operations, and will be retiring from Lions on June 30 2008. Lion Barry Shepherd presented an award of excellence to President Doug Malley. Barry’s speech used clever and poetic ways to thank our “outgoing President and Car Boot Sale initiator.”

CAR BOOT SALE
(Chairman Doug Malley)
The May Car Boot Sale attracted a record number of 65 sellers. And the BBQ also did really well and topped its previous record. It was suggested at the May Board meeting that the great day was due to our recent website promotions? Some of our sellers on the day did comment on it. But let’s wait until the next rain-free Car Boot Sale before we can be sure of that. This, our major and most important project, will be missing two key players from July onwards. We all know who they are: John Turner and John Sneyd. For this reason the Car Boot Committee has been working hard to make sure we carry on their good work. Treasurer Geoff has organized a new Car Boot Sale Phone Contact Number 0406 500 925. No phone bookings will be taken in future and a new payment system will operate. Regular sellers will be advised of the details, which will make it easier for them. Our website now shows when the CBS has to be cancelled due to rain. The notice will appear at the top of the Car Boot Sale page a short time after the decision is made. This means everyone who checks online can get the information at the same time.

LATEST NEWS
YOUTH OF THE YEAR
Our Youth of the Year Dinner event went well this year and the evening was enjoyed by all. The prior contestant interviews were held at Lion John and Pat Turner’s home.
We saw a very competent display from the four students on the night. The winner at our event went on to represent our club at the next level. She just missed out on first place at that level. Lion Don Chandler stepped in at the last minute to MC the event (in the absence of our long serving Youth of the Year Chairman John Lewis) and did a great job.
CAR BOOT SALE
The February CBS started off with clear skies but rain swept in well before lunchtime and made it not possible to continue.
The March Car Boot Sale also had a rain problem. Our luck must be sure to improve from now on. The rain cleared quickly and it turned out to be a successful day for sellers.
On the cloudy morning 11 cars that were booked in did not turn up but another 13 un-booked ones arrived and were able to be fitted in. How does John Turner, in charge of bookings, keep track of all this?
WHO CLEANS LIONS PARK BBQs?
We probably don’t think about this too often but “the always clean electric BBQs” in Lions Park at the Lagoon are not a self-cleaning ones.
Noticed working at the BBQ a couple of times Lion Barry Merchant was asked if it’s a messy job. He brushed off the question saying it’s no problem for him. He said wife Shirley drops him there on her way to Erina Fair for shopping and picks him up on the way home. “It’s not difficult ” he said.
Barry has been doing this since 1992. It’s only one of the tasks he does in the club.
The club thanks Barry for his generosity.
BRISBANE WATER CRUISE & LUNCH for CLUB MEMBERS
A large group of our Lions and Lions Ladies went on a Brisbane Water Cruise on Sun 9th of March. Organised by President Doug Malley they reported it as an enjoyable and interesting cruise.
Afterwards they had lunch at the waterside Boathouse restaurant on Brisbane Water Drive.
CLUB WEBSITE
Our club’s first website is operating well , and will be promoted further this month.
If you have ideas of what you’d like to see on the website please mention it to member Walt Roset who is constructing it.
The website will promote our club, provide up to date information on many of our projects including the car boot sale and, importantly, seek to attract new members. A club history is also planned and that will be a long term part of the project.
NEW MAJOR LIONS SPONSOR
The major new sponsor to Lions Australia will be General Motors Holden.
OLD UN-NEEDED SPECTACLES
Old un-needed spectacles are still being collected for distribution to the disadvantaged in neighbouring countries.
February 2008 Newsletter
HART WALKER BOY DOING WELL
We supplied a $6,600 Hart Walker to a local child last year. Besides being physically unable to walk as a normal child he also suffers from many other illnesses. He is a beautiful boy and now progressing very well according to our club member Lion Tim Woodham, who is in contact with the family. We don’t wish to impose upon the family so a small group of Lions may visit the family soon to for a very quick photo shoot with the local media. We try to avoid personal publicity for those we have helped. But sometimes it is essential for our club to get Lions news into the media whenever possible. However without the approval of those involved we avoid all publicity. Raising funds to help the disadvantaged is always difficult and we thank those kind members of the public who help us achieve what would otherwise be impossible.
CHRISTMAS TRAILER RAFFLE
The Christmas Trailer raffle provide a top result for the club thanks to a great effort by Chairman Barry Shepherd. Manning the trailer for so many days over many locations is not a simple task. Getting enough members to fairly share the workload is not easy. “It was OK and we got through it well” Barry said in his usual happy way.The trailer raffle started at Terrigal shops in November and then onto Wamberal shops, IGA Erina and Franklins new store at Erina Heights. Finally it onto a long run at Erina Fair where it was drawn on Christmas Eve at 2PM. The winner was a resident of Tramway Road North Avoca. The Trailer was delivered there immediately after the drawing. Our club raised $6,123 which will assist local communities.
LIONS CHRISTMAS CAKES
Acting President Barry Shepherd and Lion John Sneyd ran the Lions Christmas Cakes Project this year. 43 cartons of 9Kg cakes and 5 cartons of large cakes were sold. Total profit of $1,333 was a great result for our the club under difficult circumstances. Our usual Christmas Cake Chairman, Walt Roset, advised the Club in May 2007, that due to health reasons, he would not be able to continue in that position for Christmas 2007. We we were not able to find a replacement. With a lack of volunteers we operated on a special reduced sales plan which supplied only our larger reseller customers (shops and organisations).
CAR BOOT SALE
While Gosford City Council still maintains it’s very tough water restrictions we have had a lot of rain and also some bad luck with rain over recent months on our monthly CBS Sundays. For years we were in a drought. The February CBS started off with clear skies but rain swept in well before lunchtime and made it not possible to continue. Our car numbers were down with sellers not trusting the weather. Our BBQ still raised $236. The project continues to be a winner with excellent organisation and planning. The committee might need to consider a giant circus tent for these rainy days.
CLUB WEBSITE
Last year, following a proposal from Walt Roset the Board approved our club starting a website. It’s construction started in December 2007. It is expected to achieve a number of things. Promotion of our club, providing up to date information on our projects like the Car Boot Sale and Christmas Trailer raffle, seeking to attract new members and providing a club history, etc.
The website can keep our club history in a permanent and easily accessible form. It’s difficult to store such history safely in paper records. Lion Walt Roset will set up the site. To assist us we have received a $500 value website sponsorship for our club from “webchameleon.com.au” a leading Central Coast email marketing company.
